Frequently Asked Questions
- What can I expect after my pet's surgery?
Your pet will be tired and sedate when you come to pick them up. They will be able to walk but will be sleepy.
You may offer small amounts of water at a time upon arriving home however it is recommended to wait 2 hours before offering food and starting with 1/4 to 1/2 of their normal meal in case of upset stomach.
Your pet will need to be kept calm and quiet for the 7 days following surgery. This means restricting exercise to prevent running, jumping, or otherwise stretching their abdominal muscles.
DO NOT bathe your pet for the 14 days following surgery.
You will want to check the incision daily for any abnormal signs including: redness, swelling, discharge or odors.
Do NOT allow your pet to lick the incision, if any licking occurs immediately place an e-collar (the cone) on your pet to prevent further licking as this may cause complications in healing and infection.
- Does my pet get pain medication?
Your pet receives an injection for post operative pain. If you feel your pet will need pain medication to take home we offer 4 days of pain medication for $15. It is highly recommended to purchase this pain medication to go home, especially for female animals.
- How long does surgery take? Why can't I pick up until late?
Surgery itself is short and generally takes less than an hour, however the recovery process takes some time and your pet needs to be monitored through this period. We want your pet to be up and able to walk by the time they go home with you and this usually takes a couple of hours once surgery is completed.
- Can I pay when I pick up? What forms of payment do you accept?
Payment is due at the time of drop off in order to ease the entire process. Any balances for additional services required will be due at the time of pick up. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and Cash. Unfortunately, we do NOT accept CareCredit or Checks.
- My female pet was spayed today but I have a male at home, should I keep them apart?
YES! If your female dog was spayed today and is mounted by a male dog she can have internal trauma result and need additional surgery to repair damage caused by the male. Males may still show and interest in your female for up to a month after surgery, especially if she was in heat at the time of surgery.
- My pet received vaccinations today, what should I look for if they have a reaction?
It is normal, after vaccination(s), to appear lethargic, sleep more than usual, and have a decreased appetite for the first 24 hours. If your pet has not returned to normal after 24 hours please call one of the support clinics listed on your discharge instructions. On occasion, just as in people, vaccination reactions do occur. If there is a significant reaction, it usually occurs within the first hour after vaccination. Please be sure to monitor your pet for: itching/scratching or rubbing at the face, swelling of the face and/or lips, hives, and vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should these signs occur please call us during our business hours or one of our support clinics if we are closed.
